Corduroy Hazard Warning Surface

The corduroy tactile surface is designed to alert pedestrians, particularly those with visual impairments, to specific hazards such as steps, railway level crossings, and the absence of a kerb that defines pedestrian-only areas. It is laid crosswise to the direction of pedestrian travel to create a distinct underfoot texture that signals caution and the need for careful navigation.

This surface is also used to indicate transitions between pedestrian zones and shared spaces, such as areas used by cyclists or trains. In such cases of ciclist, a central boundary strip is recommended to help guide visually impaired individuals and cyclists along the correct path. High-contrast materials should be used to improve visual detection, and where possible, a kerb of at least 50 mm in height should be incorporated to further enhance safety and orientation.

  • Place crosswise to the direction of pedestrian travel.
  • Use before and after a flight of steps and at a railway level crossing at a station.
  • Indicate the absence of a kerb between pedestrian areas and areas shared with other users, such as cyclists or trains. In this case, implement a central boundary strip to guide visually impaired people and cyclists.
  • If possible, supplement with a kerb of at least 50 mm in height.
  • Use high contrast materials to facilitate visual detection.
