Design and Placement of Waste Bins and Containers

Public waste bins and containers are essential elements of the urban landscape. Their design and positioning should enable individuals of all abilities to dispose of waste easily, without obstructing or endangering the flow of pedestrians along accessible routes

  • Bins’ openings must remain within specified height ranges (70 cm to 1.20 m) to maintain accessibility from the pedestrian route.
  • Opening Mechanism must have low-effort handles or pedals (under 25 N force, <20 cm high), easily operated with fist or elbow.
  • Buried containers must not alter surrounding pavement levels, preserving surface continuity, preventing trip hazards, and ensuring accessibility for all users.
